The Intergovernmental Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report, dealing with the effects of climate change and adaption to climate change is out!
The effects of climate change are only becoming more frequent and widespread. Adaptation efforts have succeeded in mitigation some of the most serious climate change impacts, however current mitigation and adaptation measures are not enough if the climate warms by more than 1.5 degrees. Even reaching the 1.5 degree warming limit, which is considered a critical limit, cannot prevent ongoing changes such as the melting of glaciers and permafrost, rising sea levels and the intensification of extreme weather events such as flood waves. The effects of climate change are only becoming more frequent and widespread and global warming has already caused significant changes that can no longer be reversed.
According to the report, the effects of climate change affect large groups of people and affect nature and regions extensively. Heat waves, droughts and forest fires have become more common around the world, affecting all natural ecosystems. In addition, food security and water safety has deteriorated. The pace of change is so rapid that not all species are able to adapt, resulting in extinctions and the destruction of ecosystems.
According to the scientific community, the UN Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 will be difficult to achieve, with the current actions decided upon. The IPCC is calling for more revolutionary, systematic changes, including changes in structures of policies.
The window for repair is closing – but not over. And that’s where more a positive spin can be found to such a gloomy, yet serious forecast.
